Salmon and Trout are the same family Salmonid.Char, grayling and whitefish belong to the salmonid family too.

So when you mix up Salmon and Trout,it's not a thing being laughed at.

The easiest way to to tell the difference between salmon and trout (when in doubt) is to count the number of rays on the anal fin.All trout have 12 or less rays in this fin, whereas salmon have 13 or more rays.

First Starts:Trout are white firm meat fish;Saltwater trout have a soft sweet flavor, freshwater trout have a very fishy flavor, but can be easily remedied with white wine or citric juice(lime, lemon etc);Trout are very low with essential fish oils(omega-3's);Usually be found in freshwaters.

Coming to Salmon:Salmon are a red meat firm fish;Salmon posses a fatty flavor that most people enjoy, some do not;Salmon are very high in fish oils(omega-3's);Salmon for Sushi is great, but I think Chinese may like them BBQ to enjoy the fish oils;Salmon is a kind of typical migratory fish.
